As a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Carolyn Kittell loves having complete artistic control over every case. Thanks to her in-house digital lab, she gets to bring her creative vision to life every day. And with Amann Girrbach’s Zolid Bion as her go-to zirconia, she never has to sacrifice strength for beauty. In fact, she says Zolid Bion lets her deliver the kind of long-lasting, natural-looking results that weren’t always possible with older types of zirconia. Here, Dr. Kittell shares why Zolid Bion has become a game-changer for her and her patients.
“The beauty of Zolid Bion is that it’s gorgeous
but also extremely strong. In the past, you’d
have to give away one or the other with zirconia.
If you had a really esthetic zirconia, it was always
going to be weak and not a great option for patients
with with bruxism or for implant cases, because
the restorations would be more likely to fail. If you
needed strength, you had to go with a monotone,
opaque zirconia that was not very esthetic, and you
generally only used it in the posterior.
Zolid Bion changed that. The translucency is really
nice and the results are even prettier than lithium
disilicate. It’s the perfect balance of strength and
esthetics, which I love as a cosmetic dentist.”

A ‘Best of Both Worlds’ Material
“I use Zolid Bion for large implant cases and anything in the esthetic zone where I need extra strength and translucency. The translucency is mostly in the incisal aspect, so you still get that opacity when you need it to block out darker areas. Before Zolid Bion, I used 2 different materials— a prettier material in the anterior and a stronger material in the posterior. I would have to stain and glaze the posterior teeth to look like the anterior, which was a lot of work. Now, I use Zolid Bion and know it will look great no matter where I place it, while still being incredibly strong. I have a pretty high standard for esthetics, and I’ve been extremely impressed with Zolid Bion. It blends esthetics, reliability, and strength. A lot of dentists are afraid to use zirconia in the anterior because they think it’s too opaque or ugly, but that’s not the case with this material. It’s strong, gorgeous, and very natural looking.”
